Develop the first portfolio of 1000 circular retail products

Kingfisher is Europe’s largest home improvement retail group and the third largest in the world with over 1,120 stores in nine countries. Its retail brands are B&Q, Screwfix, Castorama, Brico Depot and Koctas.

Kingfisher is working with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to address both the challenges and opportunities associated with applying the circular economy concept in practice for the retail sector.

Kingfisher’s vision is of a world in which creating and using products wastes nothing. The Group was a Founding Partner to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and retains Global Partner status as it takes steps towards making closed loop a reality within its business. By 2020 the Retail Group’s mission is to introduce 1,000 retail products with closed loop credentials and have closed loops in ten of its supply chains. Its closed loop innovation has made strong progress during the first four years of its partnership with the Foundation and the Group has published a booklet to share both its activities and learnings to date.

Focus Areas

Kingfisher is working closely with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in three key business areas:

  • Delivering Kingfisher’s Net Positive objective of selling 1000 products with closed loop credentials by 2020 – by working jointly to devise the metrics, benchmarks and reporting that underpin this commitment
  • Creating a strong network of suppliers who are aligned around the need to transition to a circular economy

Kingfisher’s circular economy aspirations form part of its broader restorative approach to doing business: ‘Net Positive’.
