Our aim is to support higher education institutions and their academic communities and business partners in the development of curriculum and pedagogy that provides learners with the framework and skills needed to rethink, redesign and ultimately rebuild our industrial systems. The focus of our HE partnerships is around design philosophy. It is about developing dialogue around how we produce and consume and how we enable the transition to a prosperous, beneficial and restorative economy and the skills, innovations, technologies and systemic changes which will be needed.
Higher Education priority areas
Postgraduate Certificate in the circular economy
This masters level programme with the University of Bradford offers unique opportunities for business and education leaders to explore the implications for business, community and education of moving from a linear, take-make-dispose economy to a circular economy. This course provides frameworks and thinking skills key to the transition to a circular economy. It focuses on systems thinking and integrating product, service and system design.
Circular Economy lecture series autumn 2011
These lectures feature some of the world’s leading circular economy thinkers and business practitioners. Filmed to provide core content for our PGCert course and wider Foundation education programmes, these open-access video resources will soon be available to download at our online resource bank.
Design and Engineering schools
The Foundation is currently seeking opportunities to develop curriculum innovation partnerships with leading University design and engineering schools. In January 2012 we are hosting a scoping meeting with UK design and engineering academic staff and professional bodies to explore potential transdisciplinary opportunities. International projects that will be under consideration at this meeting include:
- a European circular economy conference that brokers dialogue between European higher education academic staff and business leaders around the challenges and opportunities relating to the circular economy
- an international circular economy Challenge/Competition for undergraduate design and engineering students
Business Schools
In autumn 2011 the Foundation launched an international CE Business School Network. Its’ focus is to create a new approach in business schools that engages with the key ideas and priorities of a circular economy. This vision will inform curriculum development in leading business schools around the world as they seek to educate and energise business leaders to embrace changing business agendas. Key activities in the first year include:
- The production of a reader/textbook for Executive MBA and MBA programmes: ‘The End of the Line: Effective Business in the Circular Economy’. As well as providing a coherent management guide to the opportunities within a circular economy, the textbook will review history and context, look at sectorial applications and tackle new management practices and capabilities – from supply chain management to innovation and accounting.
- A circular economy study tour in Europe for MBA and EMBA directors, Spring 2012. This study tour will draw significantly on first-hand corporate experience, with the input of thought leaders in the circular economy field. Presentations by selected authors contributing to the textbook, as well as Foundation business partners, will be complemented by site visits to leading companies.
- Development of an online ‘webinar’ series and downloadable, open-access films and graphics that feature circular economy thought leaders and practitioners in business. In the first year we will host three webinars for business and management school academic staff
