How urban development can become a solution to the ecological and social problems caused by the past design of urban systems.
Dr Janis Birkeland, Professor of architecture at the Queensland University of Technology, has been an artist, urban designer and city planner with the City of San Francisco. Her book Positive Development: From Vicious Circles to Virtuous Cycles through Built Environment Design (Earthscan 2008) attempts to spell out why everything we are doing is wrong, and how easy it would be to fix it.
