EU Commissioner calls for new economic models

EU Commissioner for the Environment Janez Potočnik has highlighted the importance of resource effectiveness in Europe’s future economic prosperity.

Increasing resource scarcity, rising prices and large amounts of waste in our current system could produce a fresh economic crisis, Potočnik warns.

Potočnik also noted that current economic models used by business and government are predicated on cheap resources and energy, and have so far failed to take into account a paradigm shift in commodity prices.

“If our current living standards are to be maintained, and the aspirations of developing countries satisfied, then the global economy will need to be changed drastically,” Potočnik said.
