Building work has commenced on a 6,000 sq ft office project at Raynsway’s Watermead Business Park in Syston, with developers adhering to well-established PassivHausdesign principles.

The development will feature a range of design elements in order to meet strict PassivHaus standards, such as a highly glazed south side to maximize heating in the winter, triple glazed windows, air source heat pumps and underground ‘earth tubes’ to naturally regulate the temperature of incoming air.

PassivHaus principles have been applied at the design stage of approximately 17,000 buildings worldwide, providing a comfortable environment without the need for a traditional heating or cooling system, typically reducing energy costs by 90%. Buildings that receive the PassivHaus standard often include:

  • good levels of insulation
  • well thought out utilisation of solar and internal gains
  • excellent levels of airtightness
  • good indoor air quality, provided by a whole house mechanical ventilation system with highly efficient heat recovery

Germany’s iconic Vauban neighbourhoodincludes 100 PassivHaus dwellings, an example of how the principles can also be successfully applied to the domestic built environment.
