The launch of Project ReDesign at Glasgow Science Centre on Tuesday 1 March 2011 saw a group of six students from Hutchesons’ Grammar School win the first of five week long internships within a leading UK industry, in July 2011.

Hosted by Dame Ellen MacArthur, over 100 students from 19 Scottish schools took part in the first of five hands-on workshops on the circular economy for young people.

During the day students rose to the challenge of re-thinking whether our current waste problem is in fact a materials opportunity, by exploring the possibilities of a systems level re-design in a world of finite resources and rising energy costs.

Volunteers from the Foundation’s Founding Partners, B&Q, BT & CISCO and National Grid were there to support the workshops, as key industry sector experts.

It has been tremendously reassuring to see how engaged the next generation of Scottish consumers are in solving the problems produced by the previous generations.

Les Jenkins (National Grid)

It was an honour to take part in the event today. The enthusiasm and range of ideas put forward by the schools involved was inspiring and event changed the thinking of the big businesses involved as to how to change and improve our own policies and thinking.

Nicola Glencorse (BT)

The next event will be held at the Royal Armouries, Leeds on Friday 4 March 2011.

It was extremely rewarding taking part in the Glasgow event where all of us as so called 'industry experts' were impressed by the high standrad of debate and level of engagement that took place. Well done to the team and thanks to all the students who participated, don't lose the opportunity to rethink the future back at your schools and colleges!
