Role at the Foundation
Sonja joined the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in 2017 as a Research Analyst for the New Plastics Economy initiative. This three-year initiative aims to apply the principles of the circular economy to rethink and redesign the global plastics system. It brings together key stakeholders such as leading companies, cities, philanthropists, policymakers, academics, NGOs and citizens to catalyse change.
Sonja has a background in Packaging Engineering. She gained several years of hands-on industry experience between 2010 and 2015, working in the research and development of international companies in Germany and Spain. In 2015, she decided to leave the job for an even more mobile way of life, embarking on a solo backpacking journey. Her travels took her through Ecuador, Colombia, Russia, Mongolia, China and Singapore, before she finally found a new home on the Isle of Wight in 2017.
