The company also innovates in recycling divisions; an example being that it achieves the highest fridge recycling rate in the UK having invested and installed specialist equipment to enable it to prepare what were once waste by-products from the recycling process to saleable products streams. Environcom has been recognised for its innovation and has won the Green Business Awards and the Chartered Institute of Waste Management “Recycling Performance of the Year” awards for this project.
The Environcom centre of excellence for display equipment recycling, based in Wales, has already achieved End of Waste status for the glass generated from Cathode Ray Tube Televisions and now sells this product back into manufacturing. Not content with this innovation Environcom has spent the last 18-months developing another innovative solution at this facility and once the operating licence has been granted it will have a significant impact upon the UK’s recycling performance. It estimates that this one innovation will deliver annual savings
of 15,000 tonnes of Co2; the equivalent of planting 23,000 ash trees annually to offset.
Environcom’s aim is to reduce the impact that waste has on the environment and this is supported by its mission statement: “To do the right thing with WEEE so that it does not have to cost the Earth”. This mission is something that all of its team focuses on throughout the group. Its specialist re-use facilities are leading the way in developing second life EEE solutions from waste streams and working with its retail partners, the company has developed some efficient reverse supply chains. However, Environcom recognises that this is just a start and as waste becomes designed out as we move towards a true circular economy Environcome sees itself moving away from being a recycler and it will become a closed loop supply chain partner enabling remanufacturing of electrical products on a large scale and therefore delivering a value creating business model for the producers of electrical and electronic equipment.
