There is a good work/life balance and recreation for the 145,000+ inhabitants. Schiphol Airport is one of the world’s most modern airports, ensuring that Haarlemmermeer enjoys excellent accessibility by private and public transport, train and aircraft.
For the last few years in a row, Haarlermmermeer has been assigned the status of prime location in the Netherlands; it also often tops the list as an attractive environment within which to live and work.
Over the last few years the municipality of Haarlemmermeer has worked with partners on a sustainable Haarlemmermeer, resulting in about 100 initiatives. This was achieved with a number of parties in and around Haarlemmermeer. Some examples of the initiatives are:
- Park20/20, the first full service Cradle to Cradle working environment in the Netherlands
- The improvement of the energy performance of existing homes through maintenance and renovation projects
- SHARE, the Sustainable Haarlemmermeer Real Estate Event
- Enginn, the kick-start for innovative start-ups
All the initiatives are described in the book ‘The future started yesterday in Haarlemmermeer’ (see our website).
Haarlemmermeer strives for the best quality of life and work, and wants to strengthen competitiveness. This is why Haarlemmermeer is aiming at the transition from the linear to the circular economy. This gives new administrative and innovative economic perspectives for Haarlemmermeer to deal with.
Passionate entrepreneurs, innovative research institutes and an ambitious government make Haarlemmermeer ideally suited as a circular testing ground. Haarlemmermeer has the perfect scale and open space to test innovative solutions. It is big enough to face different issues, yet compact and flexible enough to be the ideal testing ground it seeks to be.
The key to success is solid partners and resilient networks such as the CE100, with which Haarlemmermeer collaborates on knowledge development, innovations and ‘real-life’ pilots. Haarlemmermeer wants to share its knowledge and space, creating an open laboratory within which to experiment and gain further knowledge, and can be shared for all to benefit.
