DSM delivers innovative solutions that nourish, protect and improve performance in global markets such as food and dietary supplements, personal care, feed, medical devices, automotive, paints, electrical and electronics, life protection, alternative energy and bio-based materials. DSM’s 24,500 employees deliver annual net sales of around €10 billion. The company is listed on NYSE Euronext.
For DSM, sustainability is a fundamental business driver. Virtually everything the company now does is being driven by sustainability, and the need to identify the major global trends and challenges, then solve these challenges for its customers. DSM therefore embraces what is known as the Triple P concept: People, Planet and Profit.
DSM can uniquely contribute to the circular economy by offering products and building blocks that can be safely re-used, or are created from, for example, agricultural residues. Unlocking the value of waste such as this will be key to a truly sustainable society. Today, DSM already sells a number of safer materials, for example, halogen-free cable coatings and solvent-free ingredients that do not create a burden on the eco-system.
DSM joined the CE100, a global platform established by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to actively collaborate with other companies. DSM has also committed to be part of Project MainStream.
DSM defines sustainability as meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs – which in turn means boosting economic prosperity, environmental quality and social responsibility for the benefit of people, planet and profit.
By 2050 there will be nine billion living on this planet. The species is growing, and ageing, but most importantly it is changing.
Society’s current linear ‘take, make, dispose’ economy relies on the unrealistic and outdated assumption that large quantities of resources and energy are easily available, both now and in the future. Building more resilient economic and ecological systems will have a profoundly positive effect on communities and their ability to build a healthy future for generations to come, and this is integrated within circular economy thinking.
