The Ellen MacArthur Foundation starts the new school term with two strong partnerships in education to support its work in inspiring a generation to rethink the future.
The International Baccalaureate (IB) aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world. The IB has become a global leader in developing and providing highly-acclaimed international programmes of education to more than 5000 primary, secondary and high schools in 150 countries.
UWC (United World Colleges) is a global education movement with the goal of making education a force to unite people, nations and cultures for peace and a sustainable future. UWC currently delivers its mission through 16 international schools and colleges worldwide, a network of national committees in more than 150 countries, and a variety of educational projects and programmes. UWC runs one of the world’s biggest scholarship systems at high school level, which allows the vast majority of students to attend a UWC school or college with financial aid, making the education accessible to anyone independent of socio-economic background.
The Foundation has been developing its relationships with both UWC and the IB since 2013 and shares their values in seeing education as the key to developing the thinking needed to create an economy that works long term.
The International Baccalaureate and UWC will work together with the Foundation on curriculum innovation projects, exploring the importance of project-based, interdisciplinary learning that enables learners to consider the interconnectedness of our increasingly complex world.
“It is UWC’s mission to make education a force for peace and sustainability” says Hannah Tümpel, Director of Communications and Engagement of UWC International. “Partnering with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation gives us the chance to collaborate with a thought leader, who is rethinking the global economic system, to develop curricula for our students which equip them with the skills and know-how they need to become agents for positive change in the future.”
As part of our partnership with the International Baccalaureate, members of the Foundation team will attend The IB’s Africa, Europe and Middle East (AEM) Regional Conference from 6-8 October 2016 in Barcelona. The conference will include a keynote presentation from Dame Ellen MacArthur and a pre-conference workshop on ‘Enterprise, Innovation and the Economy’ by the Schools and Colleges team. On 28-29 October 2016, the global UWC Congress will take place in Trieste, Italy. The event takes place every 4-6 years and is UWC’s biggest gathering of all its stakeholders from across the UWC movement, as well as its thought leaders in the field of experiential education and education for peace and sustainability. Representatives of the Foundation will take part in the two-day programme, which is also open to the public. For details and online registration, find out more here.
