The Ellen MacArthur Foundation's CEO Andrew Morlet will present on the topic of circular design at the inaugural Dezeen Day, the new event from the renowned design and architecture publication.

During the event, Andrew will expand on the Foundation’s recently-announced ambition to empower designers and creators around the world to use their role to support the shift to a circular economy. The lineup for Dezeen day also includes biofabrication designer Natsai Audrey Chieza, Zaha Hadid Architects principal Patrik Schumacher, and Paola Antonelli, senior curator of architecture and design at The Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Designing for a circular economy is one of the biggest creative challenges of our time. Everything around us has been designed: from the clothes we wear to the buildings we live and work in, to systems that deliver food and mobility. Decisions made at the design stage can set in motion how a product is made, used, for how long, and if it ends up in the economy providing value, or in the ocean, environment, or lost as waste.

A vast number of people are involved in the development of the systems that provide the things we need. It’s more than just people with design in their job title, and includes anyone who designs products, services, and systems, such as product/service designers, digital system designers, architects, urban planners, design-led business innovators, start-ups, policymakers & business leaders. Our estimates show that globally, there are 160 million people who can influence materials flows through their work. The Ellen MacArthur Foundation aims to make circular design the new normal, by empowering this community through stories, tools, and networks.

Design has long been cited as vital in the transition to a circular economy, and those looking to seize this opportunity can get started by exploring the Circular Design Guide developed with IDEO, and joining the 15,000-strong online community.
