Arup, one of the world’s leading design and engineering firms, works with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation as Knowledge Partner for the built environment.

The circular economy offers a unique potential to provide solutions to global challenges — this includes the built environment industry, which is one of the most wasteful, polluting, and fragmented industries on the planet. The built environment is present in several aspects of the Foundation’s work and it is also a key consideration of our network members who all own, lease, or develop real estate for their organisational purposes. As a result, Arup and the Foundation have been partnered since 2016 to develop insights on circular economy in the built environment industry, including understanding the levers for industry change and engaging the various actors that are crucial for a transition to a circular economy.

From Principles to Practices is a two-phase collaborative project led by Arup and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation that aims to translate the principles of a circular economy into everyday built environment practices:

Arup has also collaborated with the Foundation on the following: Intelligent Assets: Unlocking the circular economy potential, Circular Economy in Cities, a suite of online resources, and The Circular Economy Opportunity for Urban and Industrial Innovation in China.
