Large scale urban farming at work in Havana

Forced to rethink its food supplies system after the collapse of the Soviet bloc and the implementation of the US embargo turning the oil tap off, Cuba has created an Urban Agriculture Department in 1994.

Today, reports show that 50% of fresh produce available in Havana is grown within the city’s boundaries, and many derelict areas (garbage dumps and other abandoned plots) have been turned into thriving vegetable patches. Using organic fertilisers – mostly domestic food waste – urban farmers have also developed seed banks and teaching programmes.

Throw it onto the compost pile or bury it in your vegetable patch – either way it will end up as valuable nutrients in the life-cycle of nature.

No sooner has the IEA’s latest outlook on world oil announced that as far as conventional and cheap-to-extract oil is concerned we are on a plateau of production and cannot expect to see the levels of 2006 again (so peak oil is passed?) than articles in a journal as august as Nature bring us notice that not only might peak coal be upon us in a matter of about 20 years but that reserves are heavily overstated.

Welsh steel roofs to produce electricity

Swansea University and Tata Steel are joining forces to produce sheets of steel coated with a light-sensitive film, sheets which would be used as electricity-generating warehouse roofing. It is estimated that the technology could produce a staggering “third of the UK’s renewable energy by 2020”.

Dr Dave Worsley, a reader in the materials research centre at Swansea University’s School of Engineering said: “We have been collaborating with the steel industry for decades (…) Until now we haven’t really paid much attention to how we can make the outside of the steel capable of doing something other than looking good. One of our engineering doctorate students was researching how sunlight interacts with paint and degrades it, which led to us developing a new photovoltaic method of capturing solar energy.”

A. Allard and D. Luong win 2010 Stockholm Junior Water Prize

Biodegradation of polystyrene: two young Canadians received the International Stockholm Junior Water Prize for their work. The competition brings together the world’s brightest young scientists to encourage their continued interest in water and the environment.

“Much of the debris in the world’s waterways are plastics which is used for fast food containers, disposable cups, and packing material for example. To date, there is no natural solution to safely take care of these harmful plastics. The winning project created a novel approach to break-down these plastics using micro-organisms and enzymes that are cost effective, and readily available. This method could greatly reduce the amount of plastics that end up in the world’s waters,” said the International Jury in its citation.
