290+ businesses call for an effective and legally binding UN treaty to end plastic pollution
The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty is convened by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation and WWF, in collaboration with aligned businesses, financial institutions and supported by strategic NGO partners.
The coalition sees the treaty as the single most important opportunity to accelerate progress towards a circular economy in which plastic never becomes waste or pollution, and the value of products and materials is retained in the economy.
To achieve this vision of a circular economycircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. for plastics, the coalition believes that progress must be achieved in three critical areas:
The reduction of plastic production and use through a circular economy approach
Increased circulation of all necessary plastics
The prevention and remediation of hard-to-abate micro- and macro-plastic leakage into the environment
Treaty on a page
The Coalition has created a roadmap, titled ‘Treaty on a page’, which outlines a set of minimum requirements to guide negotiators on the critical elements that need alignment at INC5.2.
The economic rationale for a Global Plastics Treaty
The Business Coalition for a Global Plastics Treaty advocates for harmonised regulations on the basis that they will deliver the most effective solution to address plastic pollution, while simultaneously creating value for all stakeholders involved.
Now, a modelling study by Systemiq, commissioned by the Coalition, illustrates the economic rationale for a coordinated global approach. The study found that harmonised regulations on key elements would bring benefits both globally and at a national level, including:
a reduction of global mismanaged plastic waste by 23%
more than double global EPR revenues, to $576 billion
global recycled content availability to increase by 77% by 2040.
