Just four crops—potatoes, rice, corn, and wheat—provide almost 60% of the world’s calorie intake, leaving food systems vulnerable and limiting the nutritional potential of what we eat. But nature offers much more. Biomes like the Amazon rainforest hold thousands of nutrient-rich ingredients that can diversify diets, and create new economic opportunities while regenerating ecosystems.
Harnessing this potential, Brazilian companies like Horta da Terra, Cuíca, and Mahta are designing food that works with nature rather than against it. From chestnut beverages to Amazonian superfoods, each of these businesses is tapping into the Amazon's potential, not just as a source of unique ingredients, but as a way to keep the forest standing. They are designing their products – concept, ingredients and sourcing – with nature in mind.
These companies took part in the Big Food Redesign Challenge, an initiative led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation to catalyse and inspire food brands and retailers to transform the food system by rethinking the ingredients they use and how they are sourced.
