We aim to reduce the amount of plastic in the packaging for our own brand products by 20% by the end of 2025.

We reduced plastic in the packaging of our own brand products by a total of 214 tonnes.

Examples of our actions:

• We reduced plastic by modifying the packaging of berries, minced meat and milk drinks. Moreover, for some products, such as herbs and lettuces, we replaced the plastic packaging with paper. In addition to retail packaging, we also replaced some of the plastic used in sales batch packages, such as for canned food.

• We replaced fossil-fuel plastics with recycled plastics in the packaging of numerous products, such as cleaning products. New fruit products were launched in packages made of recycled plastic. We also piloted replacing fossil-fuel plastic with a renewable raw material, certified softwood pulp, in the packaging of flowers.

• We launched new products in sustainable packaging materials: house plants in FSC certified paper, takeaway sandwiches in cardboard and toilet papers in paper packaging.

Kesko uses over ten million reusable plastic transport packages. Kesko provides alternatives to plastic bags at grocery store cashiers, such as reusable, cotton and paper bags. We decreased the use of small, thin plastic grocery bags by 107 tons. We have the deposit package system at some stores (salad bars) together with Kamupak. (https://www.kamupak.fi/). In addition, Kespro changed their cardboard boxes to reusable plastic containers for their transports.

We have switched the bottles of our store assortment juice maker to deposit plastic bottles, which totals 318 990 pcs of bottles. We have started to add new labels to our own brand packages, which inform customers that the package is made from post-consumer recycled content. We have used a total of 185 tons of recycled plastic in the own brand packaging of our fruits, vegetables and home items last year.
