At COP28, leading scientists Jim Skea, Chair of the IPCC for the 7th Assessment Cycle, and Janez Potocnik, Co-Chair of the IRP, discussed how resource efficiency and the circular economycircular economyA systems solution framework that tackles global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, waste, and pollution. It is based on three principles, driven by design: eliminate waste and pollution, circulate products and materials (at their highest value), and regenerate nature. can unlock climate mitigation solutions. They were joined by UNDP Global Director of Climate Change, Cassie Flynn, on behalf of a UNDP-UNEP-UNFCCC joint project, Deputy Director of Country Engagement NDC Partnership, Romeo Bertolini, and National Secretary Maluf, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Brazil, to explore practical tools for integrating circularity into country NDCs and wider experiences of seeking to implement the circular economy. The Foundation’s Climate Lead, Miranda Schnitger, moderated this side-event at the German Pavilion. German Federal Minister for the Environment and Nature Conservation, Steffi Lemke, and National Secretary Maluf, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, Brazil, gave opening and closing remarks.
